Able Seaman with Lifeboatman Limited
This class is scheduled for 11/13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 - 2023. Attendance is required all days of the course. This is a deposit to hold your seat in the course. The remainder is due 1 week prior to the start of class.

Our Able Seaman class is approved to include the lifeboatman exam. It states" Able Seaman (EXPLGU-001) course presents satisties examination requirements 46 CFR 12.405(a) for the "Deck General and Navigation General,"' "Deck Safety and Rules of the Road;" AND the "Practical Marlinspike Seamanship Demonstration" requirement 46 CFR 12.405(c); AND the written "Survival Craft" examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.409 for any endorsement as Able Seaman restricted to vessels without lifeboats.
This course is NOT for the PSC checkoff
You will have to show proof of 46 cfr 12.409 General requirements for lifeboatman-limited endorsements. The practical demonstration must consist of a demonstration of the applicant's ability to—(i) Take charge of a rescue boat, liferaft, or other lifesaving apparatus during and after launch; (ii) Operate a rescue boat engine; (iii) Manage a survival craft and survivors after abandoning ship; (iv) Safely recover rescue boats; and (v) Use locating and communication devices.

Sea Service Requirements
Able Seaman is a deck rating that requires qualifying sea service experience and training. The rating you will receive depends on your qualifying sea service time.
AB Unlimited - 1080 days of qualifying sea service experience on the deck of vessels operating on Great Lakes or ocean waters. AB Limited – 540 days deck service on vessels 100 GRT or over, not exclusive to rivers & smaller inland lakes of the U.S. AB Special - 360 days of qualifying sea service experience on vessels operating on any navigable waters of the US. AB Fishing - 180 days of deck service on any navigable waters of the U.S. "Combi" is not deck service (Valid only on fish processing vessels). AB OSV (Offshore Supply Vessel) - 180 days of qualifying sea service experience on the deck of vessels operating on any navigable waters. AB Sail – 180 days of deck service on sailing school, oceanographic research vessels powered primarily by sail, or equivalent sail vessels on any navigable waters of the U.S (Valid only on sailing school vessels.) AB MODU – 360 days of service on vessels 65 feet or over on any navigable waters of the U.S
License Requirements
The minimum requirements for Able Seaman Rating are:
● Be at least 18 years old. ● Be a U.S. Citizen ● Speak English ● Be TWIC eligible - Please check the TWIC site if you have any convictions
Exams
So how many exams are there? There are two exams and a practical demonstration of competency in Knot Tying and Splicing. If you fail one exam, you can retake that exam twice. If you fail it a third time, you must repeat the class. This is the National Maritime Centers directive.
- Rules of the Road/Navigation: 50 questions: Need 70% correct or 35 correct.
- Deck General and Safety: 50 questions. Need 70% or 35 correct.
- Demonstration of competency in Knot Tying and Splicing. - 10 knots in 15 minutes plus a splice and whipping.
Required Knots include Bowline, Square knot, Clove Hitch, Sheet Bend plus six additional knots selected by the evaluator.

The first set of Exams is included in the price of the course. If you must re-take an exam, there is a $40 proctor fee per student, per session. This is payable directly to the proctor. You may re-test at any of our scheduled courses for no charge.
